If you’re passionate about turning budget buys into stylish staples, you’re in the right place. Goodwill Insiders Andrea Dickerson (@it.me.andread) and Ana-Alica (@anaaliciabahamas) are spilling their best thrift tips to help you spot high-quality pieces and curate a one-of-a-kind style. Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or just diving in, these tips are sure to level up your thrifting game!

Start with Your Why

Find your why for shopping secondhand. Everyone has their own reason for shopping secondhand, whether it’s nostalgia for another time, the thrill of a great deal, or the opportunity to stand out, the reason you shop secondhand is what helps you find your unique style.

For Andrea, thrifting is a connection to her childhood, “I started shopping second-hand in high school. I used to visit a lot of yard sales with my mom and that led me into shopping at thrift stores.” She says, she’s always loved, “unique one-of-a-kind finds that you can’t find in a mall.”

Ana-Alicia also loves a unique find, but she’s also inspired by her commitment to sustainability. “There’s already so much clothes out there, so I like being able to buy secondhand instead of buying new.” Ana-Alicia also appreciates a good deal and likes that she can find “nice options that are also affordable.”

Embrace Spontaneity

Don’t be afraid to browse without a plan. Sometimes the best secondhand finds are the ones that find you, which is why our Insiders don’t mind shopping without a plan. “Sometimes I’m looking for something specific, but I mostly like to browse,” says Andrea. Ana-Alicia is on the same page saying, “A loose plan is the best way to do it. You have to be open to finding something unexpected when you shop.”

Know Your Style

With so many treasures in store, it’s still a good idea to start with knowing your style and what you like so you don’t end up buying things that don’t fit your style. “I like clothes that’s playful and feminine, so I look for a lot of dresses and anything flowy and colorful,” says Ana-Alicia. Andrea on the other hand prefers a more eclectic look. “I try to look for vintage styles and patterned clothes, so it’s easy to scan a rack for a color or style that I like,” says Andrea. She’s also not afraid to browse the whole store saying, “I like oversized clothing so I’ll shop in the men’s section to see what I can find.”

Decide What to Keep

Time to make a decision. It’s never easy to leave behind thrifted treasures, but sometimes a great find just isn’t meant to be. Luckily our Insiders know a thing or two about tough choices. Andrea starts by questioning quality, “Is it well-made? Is it in good condition? Can I make it work with some alterations?” Andrea has a good handle on altering clothing and she has even fully upcycled some thrifted fabrics, so it’s important to be realistic about your time and your comfort level with making alterations.

Ana-Alicia prefers more of a waiting game when it comes to deciding what to keep or leave behind. Ana-Alicia recommends taking the time to, “walk around with it until you decide.” If your thrifted find is truly meant to be you won’t be able to part with it. If that doesn’t work, just try it on. “It’s always helpful to try something on and really get a feel for what it looks like,” says Ana-Alicia.
