It takes the average job seeker up to 122 days to secure a job offer. When you’re eager to begin another chapter in your career, that could feel like forever. Playing the waiting game is frustrating, and it can really take a toll on your confidence and mental health.

How can you stay motivated during your job search and try your best to keep your frustrations to a minimum? Here are some tips and tools you can add to your toolbox.

  1. Set goals (and limits) for yourself. If at all possible, don’t overwhelm yourself. (Easier said than done, right?) Instead of applying for a lot of jobs that you aren’t completely interested in, set a realistic goal of 3-5 jobs that really catch your eye. Devote your time and energy to making sure your resume is top-notch and that you’ve answered all questions on the application. Having a more selective and systematic approach will lessen the tinges of burnout you get from applying for job after job.
  2. Attend networking events. Instead of focusing exclusively on online searches, try plugging into some in-person networking events. This will get you out of the house as you meet new people and connect with other professionals who may be able to share job leads with you. This is also an excellent way for employers to put a face with a name if you’re applying with them. Remember to dress the part for the type of networking event you are attending and take hard copies of your resume. It’s also smart to have an electronic business card or copy of your resume on your phone for those contacts who prefer the paperless method.
  3. Switch up your routine. This is something I recommend to the job seekers I work with. Instead of doing the same thing day in and day out, switch it up. Work from a coffee shop or a community spot where you can both relax and focus. Getting out of your routine and same old surroundings will help trick your brain, sharpening your ability to adapt to change. It may also release some endorphins, giving you a more positive mindset about the tasks and goals you have set for yourself.
  4. Stay on top of trends. Devote a small portion of your day to researching trends on your industry and the organizations or businesses you’re interested in applying to. Study trends and numbers, software platforms, mission statements and anything else that will help you stand out above other candidates. This will help you have an advantage for your phone or in-person interview.
  5. Overhaul your social media. Yes, prospective employers can look you up on social media. People you meet through networking may want to connect as well. Make sure that your social media presence is current and portrays an image you can be proud of. Add a current, professionally acceptable profile picture and update your contact information. Also, do a double check on the posts you are creating and sharing. Does your social content create the first impression you want people to have?
  6. Take care of yourself. During this time, get plenty of rest and take time for self-care. The stress of applying, interviewing, waiting, and possibly being rejected can take a toll on a person mentally and physically… especially if days turn to weeks and months. Find inexpensive ways to boost your mood, like resting, watching a movie, reading a book, working out, taking walks, going to lunch or dinner with friends and family. Another idea: clean and organize a space at home that you’ve been putting off. Decluttering has proven mental health benefits, and when you do go back to work, it’s one less thing you have to worry about.

Remember, job search fatigue is a real thing. It can cause burnout, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness and impatience. Do your best to work in some of the tips above to help yourself stay motivated and focus on your progress over perfection. The right job will come your way in no time!
