When we meet someone for the first time, supposedly it takes only seven seconds for us to form an impression of them. Within those seven seconds, we make quick judgments about the kind of person someone is. Whether or not this is fair, that first impression can color not only how we interact in that moment, but how we build trust, confidence and a positive relationship with them in the long-term.

First impressions are key because you only get one shot at them. Think about a time someone you’d never met before walked into the room. How did you respond to them? What were your initial thoughts and judgments based on their demeanor, eye contact, physical appearance or non-verbal body language? What did you like about the person? Did they hold your attention?

Now, think about how you walk into a room and approach new people. How do you think others perceive you? What impression do you give off?

When you want to create a lasting, positive first impression, here are a few things to be aware of:

Dress to be remembered
Always dress for success. You will feel have more confidence if you’ve put together an outfit that is right for the occasion, but also reflects who you are and what you are wanting to represent.

Facial expression
When we first meet someone, we tend to subconsciously focus on their face and eyes, which helps make a connection. Make sure to have strong eye contact and, yes, a smile. A warm smile helps you come across as open, friendly and receptive. If you have a closed mouth, you might instantly look less approachable. A smile is the friendliest indicator of being approachable, and one we may often forget when initiating a conversation.

Body language
Along with facial expression, body language is a major non-verbal cue. Slouching or crossing your arms can make you look bored, uninterested, and closed off. Instead, when you’re speaking to someone try to keep your hands by your sides. It’s also acceptable to clasp your hands in front or have one hand in your pocket, while the other rests by your side.

Posture
Good posture is a positive body language. Stand (or sit) up straight and hold your chin high to convey to others that you’re interested and engaged. Good posture isn’t just about appearances, either – it has the power to actually change how you feel. The next time you’re feeling anxious or uncertain, stand up straight and square your shoulders. You’ll immediately feel more alert, proud and confident.

Tone and voice
What you say (and how you say it) should match your personal presentation. Speak loud enough without being overbearing. Try to not speak in monotone. Remember to speak slowly enough that the person you are talking with can understand you (especially if you’re someone who tends to talk faster if you’re nervous). Practice good conversation: listen actively and take pauses when you’re talking to give the other person a chance to ask questions or chime in. Keep your vocabulary G-rated and avoid controversial or inappropriate topics.

These are just a few helpful suggestions. Remember, a first impression may last well beyond that initial meeting. First impressions can set the tone for future interactions and affect long-term relationships. As you navigate through life and those you encounter, make sure you use these suggestions to make sure your initial interaction is a positive, lasting one!
