Summer and seasonal jobs can be more than just a way to earn extra money. They can help build confidence, create connections, and open doors to future opportunities.  Whether you are a student looking for work during school break, a parent wanting temporary income, or someone exploring or experiencing a career change, seasonal employment can be a smart step to your next career move.

The first tip is to start early. Many employers hire for summer positions weeks or even months in advance.  Retail stores, camps, restaurants, pools, parks, and tourism-related businesses often begin looking for seasonal help well before the busy season begins. Starting early gives you more options and helps you avoid competing for the last few openings.

Next, think about the skills you already have.  Customer service, communication, organization, reliability, and teamwork are valuable in almost every seasonal role.  Even if you haven’t held a formal job before, school activities, volunteering, babysitting, sports or community involvement can all show employers that you are responsible and ready to work.

It also helps to be flexible.  Many seasonal jobs involve evenings, weekends, or holiday shifts.  Being open to different schedules, locations or types of work can make your application stand out.  Sometimes the position you didn’t originally picture for yourself ends up teaching you the most.

Networking matters too. Let friends, family members, teachers, neighbors and former coworkers know that you are looking. Many seasonal jobs are filled through word of mouth. A simple conversation can sometimes lead to an interview faster than applying online.

When applying, take time to make a strong first impression.  Keep your resume clear and simple.  Highlight your availability, relevant experience and dependable work habits.  During interviews, show enthusiasm.  Employers often hire seasonal workers who seem eager to learn, dependable, and positive.

Once you get the job, treat it like more than just temporary work.  Arrive on time, be willing to help and pay attention to details. Seasonal employees who show strong work habits are often remembered long after the season ends.

If your goal is to turn seasonal employment into permanent employment, start by acting like a long-term team member. Take initiative instead of being told what to do. Volunteer to learn different tasks. Ask thoughtful questions and look for ways to make your supervisor’s job easier.

Building relationships also matters.  Get to know coworkers, managers, and customers.  People remember employees who are helpful, respectful, and dependable.  Toward the end of the season, let your manager know that you would be interested in staying if an opportunity becomes available.

Even if there is not an immediate permanent opening, seasonal work can still lead somewhere.  A strong performance can lead to future calls, referrals, or recommendations.  Sometimes the biggest value or seasonal employment is not just the paycheck – it is the reputation you build and the doors that reputation can open.
