Nearly 70 percent of American tax filers qualify to use MyFreeTaxes.com, resulting in a savings of $200 in tax preparation fees each year. Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is kicking off the 2020 tax season with MyFreeTaxes and free face-to-face tax preparation assistance.

MyFreeTaxes.com, powered by H&R Block, is an online tax filing platform that provides free federal and state tax preparation and filing assistance, both online and in person, to individuals and families with household incomes of $66,000 or less in 2019.  MyFreeTaxes.com can be used to file federal and state taxes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for those who qualify.

Offering free English and Spanish tax support, MyFreeTaxes.com provides qualifying filers access to tax coaches for self-preparation assistance. The online tool allows taxpayers to self-file for free using a simple step-by-step process that includes free telephone, email and online chat support from IRS-certified specialists.  Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is promoting the MyFreeTaxes.com service at all of its Career Connections Centers. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Goodwill also operates Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites to provide free tax preparation services to workers who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  Millions of workers could overlook and miss out on up to $6,431 in their federal income tax refunds through EITC, and as much as $2,000 per qualifying child through the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The IRS estimates that only four out of five workers claim the EITC they earned. This leaves billions of dollars on the table each year. It is money workers can use for groceries, rent, utilities and other expenses.

Filers should review EITC eligibility rules if their household income or family situation has changed. They may qualify for EITC this year, even if they did not in the past. To qualify, a taxpayer must file a federal income tax return claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit.  This is true even if a taxpayer is not otherwise required to file a tax return. Use the IRS EITC Assistant Tool to find out about eligibility rules and amounts.
