Janice's Success Story
Janice was raising two teenage sons and her 2-year-old granddaughter when she lost her job.  Bills began to pile up and eventually Janice lost her home to foreclosure.  In a state of depression, Janice turned to the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, where she was referred to Goodwill.  After taking some training classes, Janice was hired as a seamstress in Goodwill’s Contract Services Division.  Janice smiles when she talks about being able to provide for her sons and granddaughter. “I’m making my own money and feeling better about the future for my kids.  We don’t have everything yet, but we’re getting there.”

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC and
Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC and Central NC
Announce New Partnership to Feed the Hungry

Winston-Salem, NC – October 29, 2009 -- On Thursday, October 29, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC hosted a press conference to announce a new partnership between the Food Bank, Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC and Goodwill Industries of Central NC. Both Goodwill Industries chapters have stepped up to make their locations available as drop-off locations for food donations for Second Harvest Food Bank, effective November 2. These permanent drop-off sites cover 9 of the 18 counties in Second Harvest Food Bank’s service area, making it convenient for the community to donate food to those in need.

As we approach the holidays and the New Year, the need in our area continues to grow. Our 18-county service area has the highest concentration of unemployment rates in the state. Our nearly 400 partner agencies from Boone to Burlington are reporting a 76% increase in people coming to them for food assistance over last year. This partnership will help to bring in more food donations to feed those in need across our community.
