David's Success Story
David was homeless and unemployed for years.  Drug and alcohol addiction led to his eventual arrest, but after a short stay in jail, David decided it was time for a change.  After months of recovery meetings, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation referred David to Goodwill to begin training for employment. Today, David is employed as a materials handler and has purchased and begun renovating a home. “Goodwill showed me how to have a better life.  They don’t hand anything to you.  They give you the opportunity to choose a better life for yourself.”

Goodwill Holds Open House to Showcase Employment Services

1/30/2009

Workforce Development Center - Asheville - Buncombe County

Asheville NC

Asheville, NC – Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is holding an open house at its Asheville Workforce Development Center on Thursday, February 5 from 8 a.m. to noon.  The center, located at 1616 Patton Avenue, offers free resources to job seekers including access to computers with high-speed internet, personalized career counseling and assistance with resume writing and application completion. Also at the center, Goodwill offers skills training classes in partnership with Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College in a variety of fields including healthcare, office technology and service industries.

“With the rise in unemployment and economic instability, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of people coming to Goodwill for our employment and training services,” said Jaymie Eichorn, Goodwill Director of Marketing and Communications.  “We want to let people in western North Carolina know that we are here and can help.”

In conjunction with the open house, the adjacent Goodwill retail store will be holding its grand reopening on February 5 beginning at 8 a.m. to celebrate the recent renovations that provide customers a greater selection of clothing, books and a special section of Valentine’s Day items.

Goodwill’s workforce development programs are made possible through the sale of donated items in its retail stores.  In 2008 alone, Goodwill served over 33,000 people and placed over 3,500 people into jobs in the community.  For more information, visit www.goodwillnwnc.org.
