Maria's Success Story
After spending her entire career at a respected textile manufacturer, Maria’s world was shattered when she was downsized.  She stayed in bed all weekend, but by Monday she was in line at the Employment Security Commission, determined to find help.  It was there she learned about Goodwill’s Career Connections, a program that helps people seek and secure employment.  After six weeks, Maria found a new career and a fresh start as a manufacturing buyer at Alcan.  “I just feel peace and gratitude for what Goodwill has helped me to achieve.”

Goodwill Opens New Store in South Asheville

9/22/2008

Buncombe County

Asheville NC

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina announced the grand opening of its south Asheville retail store on Thursday, September 18 at 51 Mills Gap Rd.  Goodwill’s modern thrift store offers a large inventory of clothing, furniture, shoes, toys and housewares.  Customers are invited to celebrate the event and browse the aisles of newly displayed items for sale.

“This is our fourth store in Asheville and our ninth store in western NC,” said Jaymie Eichorn, director of marketing for Goodwill. “We have always received so much support from our shoppers and donors in this area and we are excited at the opportunity to serve the south Asheville community with our newest store.”

Revenue generated from the sale of donated items funds career development and training programs that help people find jobs and reach financial stability.  In the Asheville area, Goodwill offers these programs at its Asheville Workforce Development Center at 1616 Patton Avenue.   Located in the Center is Career Connections, a resource offering free personalized career counseling to job seekers.

“The more donations we receive and the more people who shop in our stores enable us to expand our programs to serve more people who are unemployed or underemployed,” said Eichorn.   “We served over 22,000 people in the last year alone but there are many more who need help getting back on their feet.”

Store staff, local officials and members of Goodwill executive management will attend the ribbon cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 18.  The south Asheville Goodwill store will be open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.  In addition to its Asheville locations, Goodwill operates stores in Canton, Brevard, Black Mountain, Fletcher and Hendersonville. Donations of saleable clothing and household items are accepted at all Goodwill stores.
