David's Success Story
David was homeless and unemployed for years.  Drug and alcohol addiction led to his eventual arrest, but after a short stay in jail, David decided it was time for a change.  After months of recovery meetings, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation referred David to Goodwill to begin training for employment. Today, David is employed as a materials handler and has purchased and begun renovating a home. “Goodwill showed me how to have a better life.  They don’t hand anything to you.  They give you the opportunity to choose a better life for yourself.”

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and Forsyth Technical Community College in partnership with Twin City Quarters, are offering a class in Banquet Server Certification.   The six-week course runs August 11 through September 23rd. and will be held Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.  Training will take place at the Marriott Downtown at 425 North Cherry Street, Winston-Salem.

“I was exploring future opportunities for our clients and found this was a real need in the community because there are many openings and companies no longer hire untrained individuals” said Tempy Albright, job developer for Goodwill.  “They are picky because they can be.”

According to Albright, the banquet service course can increase one’s chance of being hired by 90% in a field where servers can make up to $30,000 per year.  This course will be taught in a “real world” setting to teach students to prepare function rooms to meet the needs of banquet guests.  Students who successfully complete the course will leave with a certificate in both career readiness and in banquet set-up and service.  In addition, graduates of the program are guaranteed an interview at Twin City Quarters for an opportunity to join its elite banquet serving staff and, according to Assistant General Manager Jen Prpich, those that excel in the program will be hired.

Students taking this course will receive training in banquet set-up, quality customer service and the rules and regulations of alcohol service.  The cost for the Banquet Server Certification is $93 and students may register by calling 336-761-1002.  Scholarships are available for those who qualify.
