Alicia's Success Story
After Alicia’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her grandmother with Alzheimer’s, Alicia knew she had to move to North Carolina to care for them.  Although her resume was filled with clerical work, she found the greatest satisfaction in care giving.  Alicia enrolled in Personal Care Assistant classes at Goodwill.  After graduation, she was immediately hired by Brighton Gardens in Winston-Salem.  Today, Alicia’s mother is healthy and the family is thriving.  She also plans to enhance her skill set by taking administrative classes at Goodwill.  “Hospitals pay top dollar for that,” she says with a smile.

6th Annual Donate to Educate High School Challenge to be held March 11-20

2/25/2008

Forsyth County

Winston-Salem NC

The Donate to Educate High School Challenge is a fun and educational partnership between Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina, Inc. and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County high schools. Participating high schools engage in a healthy competition to see which school can collect the most clothing for Goodwill. The 5th annual event raised a record 38,000 pounds between eight high schools, with Mt. Tabor taking home the prize for most donations collected.

The 6th annual Donate to Educate High School Challenge will take place March 11 through March 20 with nine high schools participating: Mt. Tabor, Reagan, East Forsyth, West Forsyth, Reynolds, Glenn, Carter Vocational, Bishop McGuinness and North Forsyth.

The Challenge helps educate students and, in turn, the community, on the mission of Goodwill. Students and high school service organizations receive credit for participation and earn cash and prizes for their school. They also learn the value of helping others, thus creating active citizens within our community. All of the clothing collected is processed and sold in Goodwill’s retail stores which provide revenue to support Goodwill’s mission.

Goodwill sells donated items in its stores to fund career development and training programs that help people find jobs and become more independent. Goodwill served over 22,000 people in the last year alone. Donations of saleable clothing and household items are accepted at all Goodwill stores.

Biscuitville is the event’s corporate sponsor for the second consecutive year, providing discount coupons and prizes for the participating students, service clubs and teachers.
