Awards Banquet Celebrates Participants and Partners

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina, Inc. held its Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, November 1, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Winston-Salem. The event honored Goodwill program participants who have overcome barriers to employment to become successful, productive members of the community. Also recognized at the event were local businesses and members of the community who have significantly contributed to the success of Goodwill and its mission, which is to provide training services that help people become more independent.

The keynote address was given by John Allison, president & CEO of the Cato Institute, and former CEO of BB&T Bank. Allison spoke about the importance of developing self esteem, and recognizing that every job is important. Following Allison's address, awards were presented by Goodwill Board Chairman Dr. Andrew Peoples, and Master of Ceremonies Austin Caviness of WXII-12.

Goodwill’s 2012 Achiever of the Year Award was presented to Michelle Henson. Michelle, who overcame a problem with drug addiction, has been working as a retail associate in the Asheville Goodwill store for over four years, and was praised for her dedication and focus.

Goodwill’s 2012 Graduate of the Year Award was presented to Lester Davis. Davis overcame many societal barriers on his journey to full employment. He credited Goodwill with making his success possible, and told Ms. Henson that he expected her to be receiving the Graduate Award in the near future. Davis works as a chef at WS Prime.

Also recognized were outgoing Board members Penni Bradshaw and Mike Gunter as well as the end of term as board chair of Dr. Andrew Peoples. Goodwill President Art Gibel honored the late Dr. Bob Greene, former President of Forsyth Tech, with the Heritage Award for forging a lasting partnership with Goodwill, which has resulted in employment training for over 9,000 people.

Special awards were also presented to Goodwill Partners. Those included: Partner Agency of the Year to the YWCA of Northwest North Carolina; Employer of the Year to Deere-Hitachi; Corporate Donor of the Year to Alex lee, Inc.; Contractor of the Year to the NC Department of Transportation; and, a special Recognition Award to the Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont.
