Goodwill Store - Wilkesboro - Wilkes County
Wilkesboro NC
Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina opened "The Outlet Store" on Monday, October 1, 1962 at the corner of Tenth and A Street in North Wilkesboro. The store was not named "Goodwill" because a privately owned retail store was already doing business under that name. The facility had a large basement workshop for training people in furniture and clothing repair, enabling Goodwill to offer rehabilitation services directly into Wilkes County in partnership with the ESC and the NC Vocational Rehabilitation Division.
In 1990, the store relocated in downtown North Wilkesboro to 906 Main St where it became a retail store only, conducting a brisk business in gently used donated goods rather than repaired items. It moved again in 1997 to 1821 N. Highway 421 in Wilkesboro, the current home of Goodwill's Career Connections Center. Goodwill built a new state of the art facility in 2008 at 1001 Gateway Avenue where the store currently does business.
The 50th Anniversary celebration took place on Saturday, April 21. Everything in the store that day was 20% off. There were tents with a wide selection of new goods and computer supplies. There was also live music, face painting for kids, the Chic-fil-A cow and Papa John's pizza for sale. Gifts were given to the first 50 donors and customers. There was an auction for 50 unique items and 50 drawings for prizes throughout the day.
