The Real World Event is A community collaborative program sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina, Consumer Credit Counseling, Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development Board, State Farm Insurance, and other community partners. Over 200 Forsyth County teenagers and young adults will be participating in a one-day networking simulation to help expose them to the "Real World" The event takes place on Thursday, April 12, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Piney Grove Enrichment Center, 4633 Grove Garden Drive, Winston-Salem.
The Real World Program for youth (ages 15-21) is an interactive way to help young people use and develop life skills, which include: carving out education and career plans; learning the basics of getting and keeping a job; and locating appropriate housing.
"It's a real-world simulation designed to introduce young people to the concept of tradeoffs,” said Jaymie Eichorn, Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. "We'll address education and employment decisions which need to be made in conjunction with lifestyle choices, everything from securing housing, to buying a car,” said Eichorn.
During the one day event, students will be assigned an occupation based on an employment-educational assessment. The job will provide a salary, and participants will be challenged to develop a budget that will meet their every days needs, as well as allow for unexpected expenses that may arise, such as illness or an accident. This event will help them re-evaluate job and career choices based on lifestyle preference.
