Winston-Salem - Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is hosting an informational kick-off event for the GoodGuides™ Youth Mentoring Program on Tuesday, March 2 from 6-7 p.m. at Goodwill’s headquarters, 2701 University Parkway. GoodGuides™ targets youth who are at-risk for dropping out of school, facing legal troubles, or are at risk for delinquency due to abuse, disability, drug or alcohol dependence, or gang membership. Goodwill is currently seeking volunteer mentors and is enrolling youth between the ages of 12 and 17 who would benefit from the program. Speakers at the event include Mayor Allen Joines and Tabitha Bailey of the Josh Howard Foundation. The event is open to the public. GoodGuides™ is made possible in Forsyth County through a two-year, $300,000 grant to Goodwill as part of a $19.1 million award to Goodwill Industries International from the U.S. Department of Justice. Funds were dispersed to 56 independent Goodwill agencies around the country. The program is free to participants and is designed to assist youth in overcoming disadvantages and avoiding delinquency. The effort is part of a national mentoring program known as Goodwill GoodGuides™ that helps teens finish school and transition into productive careers through the guidance of trusted adults. "GoodGuides will provide guidance to our young people who need direction toward a better path for the future,” said Lori Holmes, Goodwill Youth Programs Director. “By helping our youth, we can help families and communities for generations to come.” If you know of a trusted adult who would like to mentor youth in your community or know of a youth that could benefit from these services, please contact Lori Holmes at (336) 724-3621 ext. 1286 or lholmes@goodwillnwnc.org or attend the information session on March 2.
