Janice's Success Story
Janice was raising two teenage sons and her 2-year-old granddaughter when she lost her job.  Bills began to pile up and eventually Janice lost her home to foreclosure.  In a state of depression, Janice turned to the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, where she was referred to Goodwill.  After taking some training classes, Janice was hired as a seamstress in Goodwill’s Contract Services Division.  Janice smiles when she talks about being able to provide for her sons and granddaughter. “I’m making my own money and feeling better about the future for my kids.  We don’t have everything yet, but we’re getting there.”

WELCOME TO GOODWILL

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is a private, nonprofit organization that has been serving the community since 1926. At Goodwill, we believe that all people, regardless of situation, should have access to meaningful employment. Through workforce development programs, we help individuals develop the skills they need for today's job market.

A significant portion of the funding for our programs comes from sales of donated items in our retail stores. Merchandise for our stores is provided through the generous donations of clothing and household items from the community. These donations are critical to our mission. By donating to Goodwill or shopping in our stores, you are helping to support workforce development programs that serve over 40,000 people in northwest N.C. each year.

Goodwill opened its Whitaker Regional Operations Center on September 3, 2009.   Named for Billy G. Whitaker, who served as President & CEO of Goodwill from 1986 to 2006, the facility houses an outlet store, retail store, Career Connections Center, computer recycling program and transportation hub.  The building dedication video below outlines Mr. Whitaker's remarkable vision that shaped the Goodwill organization and paved the road for its success.

Weatherization Makes $ense: A Workshop

August 4 from 6pm-8pm, Goodwill Industries 2701 University Parkway

If your energy bills are too high, or if you want to make your home more comfortable and environmentally friendly, this workshop is right for you! Every day, air leaks let in the hot summer air or let out your heat in the winter, making you air conditioner and heater work more than it has to. Weatherizing your home can effectively seal these leaks and cut down on that energy bill–saving you money, and saving excess carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Join Piedmont Environmental Alliance, Goodwill Industries, and Forsyth County Library to learn more about home energy audits, basic weatherization projects, and landscaping for energy efficiency.
